Hit-Girl Issue 5 Bill Sienkiewicz Variant

Writer Mark Millar shared the Bill Sienkiewicz variant cover artwork for issue 5 of the Hit-Girl miniseries. Sienkiewicz's variant is an obvious nod to his own classic work for issue 1 from the acclaimed Elektra: Assassin miniseries, he collaborated with Frank Miller.

Hit-Girl issue 5, the final issue of the miniseries arrives in November.

PREVIEW Earth 2 Issue 8 Cover: The Last Amazon

DC Comics recently announced that artist Yildiray Cinar would be filling in for a few issues of Earth 2, giving current artist Nicola Scott a much needed break. Another revelation which featured teaser cover artwork for Earth issue 8, was that Cinar's run would encompass the arrival of a new character simply called "The Last Amazon". We sort the possible clues on who that character might be. [Update]

We narrowed it down to two possibilities, one of them has direct Earth 2 roots from her via the past DCU continuity and another, shared a bond. Could the Last Amazon of Earth 2 be either Wonder Girl or Fury? Here's a breakdown:

[ UPDATE: Answer revealed at the bottom ]

Why we think it's Fury:

In the previous DCU continuity, Fury was Hippolyta "Lyta" Trevor, the daughter of the Golden-Age Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor. Bearing the same powers and abilities as her mother, she and a few of the children and descendants of the Earth 2 eventually formed the team Infinity, Inc. She eventually gets into a relationship with teammate Hector Hall and their child figures heavily in the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman. Fury's Earth-2 roots lead us to believe that she's the Last Amazon.

Why we think it's Wonder Girl:

If any character has grown through "origin hell", it would be Wonder Girl aka Donna Troy. Her story has been revamped so many times, we don't even remember what to follow anymore. Her original roots have her being given Amazon abilities. Donna remains an interesting character whose convoluted history deserves well, another chance in this new and different setting. Given that she hasn't appeared yet in the New 52 and the diminishing need and remote chance of DC Comics resurrecting her in the current New 52 timeline, we think she's the Last Amazon of Earth-2.

Why we could be wrong:

Of course, we could be completely wrong and it could be a different and new character altogether. Cilnar's pencil work for Earth 2 issue 8 shows a woman utilizing a whip or a lasso. She could be a combination of both characters.

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

Answer: Fury. This was revealed at a recent Comic Vine Podcast.

Review: American Vampire Issue 31

Despite a moderately dull issue for the most part, writer Scott Snyder turns up the heat in the latter pages of the ending.  Surprises are in store for one of the characters as Snyder pulls out a blast from the past.

Rather than thrill us with another action filled issue from start to finish, Snyder gives readers some down time in American Vampire issue 31.  We mostly find our protagonists Pearl and Skinner Sweet away from hunting the vampire threats in Hollywood and hunkered down in VMS headquarters.  Of course, after last issue's pulse pounding revelation, Snyder simply glosses over that incident and moves on with the storyline.  Oh, it's addressed by both characters but is left as an afterthought, at least by one of them.

Snyder shows us the true nature of one of the characters but it isn't something we haven't known since issue one.  There's no turning back with this plot element that Snyder has thrown in and the lives of our favorite characters will never be the same after this story arc. That is, if they survive at all.  Issue 31 isn't a complete letdown as Snyder has more surprises waiting for readers at the end of this story.  This issue takes from deep underground VMS headquarters to the far off desert landscape of Los Angeles. It's another shocking plot reveal and will turn things upside down even more.

We've come full circle with the reunion of Pearl and Skinner, so maybe it's fitting and timely that Snyder introduces this new wrinkle and draws in again back to the early issues. Lastly, there's an interesting element that readers should take note of that goes beyond the usual amazing artistry of Rafael Albuquerque.  That is, view each panel and setting carefully because the color work by Dave McCaig is simply remarkable and successfully conveys each scene as the story progresses.  McCaig's work masterfully transports readers from one completely different place to another.

Final Verdict: B

Comic fans aren't strangers to the fascinating stories from writer Grant Morrison. His classic revamps of The Doom Patrol and Animal Man and his own original creations like The Invisibles and We3, have left him adored by fans throughout the years.

Of course, there is his seminal work on Batman including his current run on Action Comics and Batman, Inc. as well.
