Jeff Lemire gives us a breather from the ghastly and gory images of the last few months and presents a unique tale for this month's Animal Man. Issue 6 doesn't really feature much about the current storyline of Buddy Baker's origin until the ending. Readers will enjoy this special issue because it focuses on something completely different. Furthermore, I didn't really want to see any more of The Rot creatures and their grotesque appearances! With Animal Man issue 6 Lemire presents a totally unique story focusing on Buddy Baker the movie star/actor as the central angle. I'll admit I was thrown off by this aspect initially but enjoyed a good read nonetheless.

It could be that the movie depicted in this issue is a metaphor for Buddy Baker's own personal issues with family time and such.  It's a quite a serious role for Baker to portray, showing the reality of what crime fighters have to go through. As you know, Buddy Baker was previously presented as an action star/stuntman as I recall in his previous series. The movie story is a bit Watchmen-esque and I won't spoil the plot for you. It's an excellent concept presented by Lemire. Guest Artist John Paul Leon does an excellent job with the artist duties for this issue. His work here reminds of David Mazzuchelli's fine stuff in Batman Year One. Finally, the talking cat is still with the Baker family. You'll have to figure out what that's all about in our previous issue reviews.

Overall, Animal Man issue 6 offers something quite different for current readers as it explores the common man trying to protect and save the world.

The Good: Wonderful concept by Lemire here. Buddy Baker is probably a great actor!

The Bad: Expect to see The Rot next issue!

Final Verdict: A
