Review: NBA 2K13 for iPhone

How does the sequel to NBA 2K12 for the iOS platform, stack up to it's predecessor? Well, NBA 2K13 doesn't foul out as it becomes the dominant mobile basketball game.

Greatest Games

When NBA 2K12 was released, it was riddled with a few bugs that hampered the overall experience. There was an incredible lag between the game announcers and the action on the court. Often times, announcers would state the action to a much later period instead of on the spot. Despite this simple flaw, the game proved to be a lasting favorite all season with roster updates and other features being added such as social media network sharing, along the way.

As the 2013 basketball season begins, 2KSports' NBA 2K13 for iPhone and iPad, elevates itself once again, as the premiere basketball game for the mobile gaming community. Building upon it's previous iteration with newer graphics, updated Greatest Games features and others, NBA 2K13 continues it's dominance like Shaq in the paint, during his Orlando Magic years. This year's release isn't hampered with any initial problems and you'll enjoy once you've immediately downloaded it.

Presentation
NBA 2K13 retains much from it's predecessor with the menus and options. You can play against someone via GameCenter or Bluetooth. The biggest change and addition is in the Greatest Games feature where you have a wider selection of players to choose from. Furthermore, you can expect to relive other athlete's greatest games as well but the initial batch featuring Allen Iverson, Drik Nowitzki and more, isn't bad at all!

Gameplay
Not too much has changed from NBA2K12 with the controls. There are few games on the mobile gaming genre that have a good system for controls, that mimic it's hardware console counterparts and NBA 2K13 is one of them. The virtual D-Pad is still here as well as the one touch tap control system. The layout for the controls have vastly improved and now take up larger space on the screen. Though it doesn't deter from the onscreen action. It won't take you long to master this game with these simple controls.

Final Verdict
Simply put, NBA 2K13 continues it's reign in the mobile gaming platform. The playing experience is fun, frenetic as the real games are. Most importantly, the affordable price for this universal app, playable on the iPad as well should make it a lasting selection for your mobile gaming needs.

Review: NIKE + Running App for iPhone

An updated user interface layered with graphic friendly buttons and menus, secures the NIKE+ Running app as one of the best apps around. Bundled with more features and social networking sharing capabilities, your exercise routine will never be the same.

When we first reviewed the app awhile back, it was already a winner in our book, as one of the few have apps on your iPhone. The app with it's settings can capture your running schedule and respond with what your results after your routine. A recent update has revamped the old look and feel, giving it a more colorful and "infographic" look for the app. Which isn't necessarily a negative as bigger onscreen buttons are a welcome addition and a great departure from the old look. New social media sharing connectivity for sites like Facebook and Twitter, gives your friends and family an insight into your running regimen. Of course, you can still turn off these functions but why deny the world, the hard work and effort you put into getting in shape?

Furthermore, other new features include statistical charts and graphics detailing all of your runs and the ability to add what particular shoe you're using. NIKE+ Running still ranks as one of the best and most useful apps for the longhaul on your iPhone.

Instagram Updates

I've been using Instagram far more than I have recently and that's thanks in part to the app's recent updates. Certain aspects and features such as the user interface and sharing capabilities have greatly improved. Having been acquired by Facebook, I wonder how much of the design change has been implemented by the parent company. Furthermore, the connection to another app, Foursquare has also been more prominent as well. This update allows users to geotag their photos but if you value your privacy, you may want to limit this feature.

The main interface still maintains the minimal look as before. Updated icons, buttons and menus are certainly more appealing and are a treat visually. Twitter users will no longer be able to find and their associates through the Options menu, as it has been completely cut off. This is not Instagram's fault but rather Twitter's own doing, forcing users to do a manual search instead.

The latest update for Adobe Photoshop Express for iPhone and iPad, version 2.5, now includes a brand new Effects Pack. The pack features an array of effects such as distortion, tilt shift and many numerous others. Furthermore, the interface seems a bit easier to use and less menus, when compared to Apple’s iPhoto app.

The pack is an in-app purchase when existing users update the app from the App Store.

Next Generation iPhone : Our Wish List

With the next generation iPhone possibly debuting later this year, here's a few of our requests and changes when it comes to the look and feel of the revered device. Maybe the fine folks at Cupertino will listen? These are strictly hardware changes though:

Design:

Of course when it comes to design it's very subjective.  The flat side areas of the current generation is handy for those who've desired placing the phone down on a flat surface to snap pictures or take movies. We wouldn't necessarily mind a design change but retaining this flat surface would still be welcome. Third-party vendors like Hipstamatic sell their own integrated case/stand for this latest model.

Review: Soul Calibur for iPhone

The last time I played Soul Calibur was on the Dream Cast gaming console, so you might say its been awhile. You can imagine my surprise, when the game suddenly appears on the app store. Joining the already crowded field of fighting games like Street fighter, Infinity Blade and even Fight Night Champion on the iPhone and other iOS devices, Soul Calibur is a welcome treat for nostalgic reasons.

It's A Small World App

Children of all ages and even adults will enjoy Disney's It's a Small World app for it's amazing interactivity and overall appeal.  While this digital version is no substitute for the actual Disneyland attraction, think of it as a great alternative than not being able to experience it in person. The app immerses the viewer with the same foreign locales and cheerful presentation as you head off on the same journey like on the actual ride.

Kids will the enjoy the sing-a-long feature and the interaction as the screen becomes a virtual global playground while learning new cultures and discovering new places.  Touch anywhere on the screen within the different cities and environments and something fun will happen.  The overall message that it's a small world, shines through.

Grand Theft Auto 3 for iPhone Review

If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be playing Grand Theft Auto III on my cell phone, I would've had you locked up for insanity. However as technology has changed some of our expectations, Grand Theft Auto III on the iPhone seems inevitable. While it's a universal app, it is definitely more suited for the iPad screen than the iPhone 4, for a true and near-gaming experience similar to our enjoyment on the consoles and computer. 10 years later the game still retains the same open-ended playability and lasting value despite the difference in platform.
