Marvel 75: Phoenix and Elektra Deaths Revisited

Two character deaths shaped the course of Marvel Comics in the 1980s but have no impact on today's storylines. Retcons removed any emotion and legacy from these two events in Marvel Comics.

Marvel has unveiled the cover for AvX issue 11 with art by Jim Cheung. From what we can tell, "Team Phoenix" members Cyclops and Emma Frost, possessed by The Phoenix Force in AvX issue 5, appear to be battling each other.

WOLVERINE: Sabretooth Reborn

Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi reunite to bring Victor Creed back to life in the upcoming "Sabretooth Reborn", beginning in Wolverine #310.  Look for an "in-depth exploration of the character" by Loeb and the return of Romulus.  The saga also features guest stars Cloak and Dagger and more intrigue and eye-popping artwork.  Pictured above are the covers for Wolverine #310 and #311

X-Men: Storm

It's amazing how many changes costume-wise and especially appearances, a character goes through over the years. While there may be some fan backlash on social networking sites for fan favorites such as Power Girl in her Earth-2 series outfit, the same hasn't been said for Storm, the revered member and former leader of the X-Men.

On the big screen, fans finally got to see her rock her famous mohawk look, in the X-Men: Age of Apocalypse film. Generations have been used to Halle Berry's portrayal of the mutant but we were definitely treated to Alexandra Shipp's portrayal of young Ororo Munroe. It should be noted that only Kitty Pryde gave her disapproval of Storm's drastic new look when Storm revealed it, to the entire team.

Marvel Comics' TJ Dietsch highlights some of her spectacular costumes during the past few decades. In fact, her biggest change came during the 1980s right after initial appearance. Capitalizing on the waning punk rock and new wave movement at the time, Storm sported a mohawk! Here's a look at the weather wonder woman over the years and to her style in the Marvel NOW X-Men series:

X-Men: Cyclops

When you hear the phrase "ladies man", the mutant superhero Cyclops doesn't really come to mind at first, but throughout his past, Scott Summers has been with quite a few women already. Furthermore, most of his past relationships haven't really ended on a good note either. The X-Men leader despite his quiet demeanor and demanding nature and mutant powers, "Slim" Summers has charmed even the most powerful mutant and non-mutant ladies out there.

His first established relationship was with team mate Jean Grey when they were part of Charles Xavier's early group of mutants/students under his tutelage. In this early portrayal, Scott was the shy type and never quite readily admitted his feelings towards Jean. Later on, they both discovered mutual feelings for each other and the relationship blossomed from there. Their love would be tested when Wolverine joined the team. Logan also began developing feelings for Jean. Both Scott and Logan would grieve for her when the Phoenix force proved to be a threat to the universe, and when Jean ultimately lost her life. It was after this time that Scott left the team.

The battle of the year draws closer and closer! As excitement builds for Avengers vs. X-Men, Marvel has unveiled some John Romita Jr. preview artwork.  Having been a long time fan of his simple and fluid style during his time on Uncanny X-Men and Daredevil, it's great to see his style remain so timeless to this day.

Ahead of the upcoming battle of the year, Marvel Comics has unveiled the variant covers Avengers v. X-Men issues 1 and 2. Ryan Stegman pencils an awesome variant cover for issue 1 showcasing Captain America taking on Cyclops. Nick Bradshaw provides the art chores for the issue 2 variant cover.  Which side are you on?

Review: X-Men: Days of Futures Past

There's a few X-Men stories that stand out for me during the Chris Claremont/John Byrne period.  My first choice would be the Days of Future Past saga.  The future of superheroes and mutants alike hang in the balance in one the greatest storylines ever, involving the X-Men.  If our heroes fail to protect Senator Robert Kelly, the Mutant Control Act would be enacted enabling the government to utilize Sentinels to hunt down and terminate them.  It was actually released during Claremont and Byrne's final run and the first instance that Claremont would incorporate time travel within the X-Men storylines.

In Days of Futures Past, the future is quite bleak for mutants and heroes.  A majority of them are captured or deceased or interred in camps with Sentinels standing guard. A plan is devised within the remaining mutants and heroes of the future timeline, to telepathically send back the adult Kitty Pryde to 1980.  Upon arriving in our current time, Kitty must convince the X-Men to stop the Brotherhood of Mutants from killing Senator Kelly, who is also a presidential candidate, to prevent the disastrous future that awaits.  Will they succeed in changing the future? Only time will tell.
