The New 52: Animal Man Issue No. 4 Review

If you haven't picked up the previous issues of Animal Man, this review will be a bit confusing in terms of continuity. However, it's another stepping stone in understanding the new origin of Animal Man though as more details about The Rot is revealed!

Continuing the battle between Animal Man and creatures known as The Rot in issue 3, we find Animal Man severely wounded, facing near defeat from creatures much powerful than him, and about to be consumed by them. However, Maxine comes to his aid as The Totems remind her of her abilities and uses her powers to eradicate The Rot from The Red domain. Furthermore, she heals her father's wounds! Of course, the full extent of Maxine's powers are unbeknownst to Buddy Baker and to us, frankly. We did get a glimpse of what she can do, as witnessed in the first issue of the new series. She is of course, the next avatar of The Red, which is the life web that connects all living things.

Buddy has questions
Meanwhile, Ellen and Cliff are being escorted by Detective Krenshaw, as these two members of the Baker family were attacked by agents of The Rot at the Baker house. Narrowly, after they escaped their assailants, Ellen called Krenshaw for assistance. Now all three journey towards Ellen's mother's farm, which is a designated sanctuary in times of trouble and emergencies for the household. Unfortunately, the family finds out that Detective Krenshaw has been possessed by The Rot as well.

Ellen tries to find out what happened to Cliff

Overall, another magnificent issue from writer Jeff Lemire and artist Travel Foreman. You'll get a hint of a connection between a certain "green creature" from DC Universe and The Red. Plus, a new member joins the Baker household to help and protect Maxine's development as the next iteration of the The Red.

The Good: Great story!

The Bad: Again, the artwork can be pretty intense especially the depictions of The Rot creatures. Not for kids at all!

Final Verdict: A
