MobileMe to iCloud

Apple has revealed a few details of the transition from MobileMe to iCloud. Find out what happens to your email account and pictures.

Apple iTunes With the impending change of Apple's MobileMe to iCloud coming in the fall, the company has provided some details as to what will happen to the existing email addresses (me.com and mac.com) of it's users as well as any stored photographs in their iDisk or Gallery subsections. Several features and services of MobileMe such as Find My iPhone and the Find My iPad, Calendar and Contacts will be transitioned to the new iCloud service. These features will most likely retain their existing function and service. Other features such as iWeb (the ability to host your own websites), iDisk and Gallery may not be available anymore in the change. While we won't know until the new service launches in the coming months, here's what to expect with the existing services:

iDisk provided users with the ability to store documents, media files (music and movies) online. Further information will be given to users as the transition approaches. Users should save copies of these files locally starting now. It is presumed that the ability to purchase additional storage will be allowed though.

Gallery allowed users to upload photographs and create albums online. Anyone was able to view the albums with the appropriate link. Users should have existing copies of these same photographs in iPhoto. It is advised that you do not delete those same photos.

iWeb enabled users to create webpages and host files and photographs as well. iWeb will likely cease to exist as the program was not included in the recent iLife '11 update. Users are advised to seek other providers for their hosting needs.

MobileMe had two different email accounts during it's time: me.com and mac.com. The company has stated that users will be able to keep their existing accounts. No word yet if a new email account (@icloud.com?) will be established.

Existing users can refer to this FAQ for more details.
