Everyone's favorite family man and superhero Animal Man, is back in an all-new series. This time around he's returned to the DC Universe embarking on even stranger adventures. Here's a review of the first two issues so far.

Buddy Baker going through the motions |
It's been awhile since I've picked up Animal Man and was elated when I discovered he was part of the New 52 initiative by DC Comics. Animal Man's adventures throughout his original series always appealed to me because it wasn't always the stereotypical superhero vs. supervillain-type of book. I thoroughly enjoyed the strange adventures Grant Morrison put him through during his initial revival. Yes, I actually dealt with Buddy Baker losing his family but glad a happy ending overturned that tragedy. Peter Milligan's writing also got me hooked and I survived Jamie Delano's interpretations of the character. Anyone else remember when Buddy almost died and was reborn as Chimera-type creature? Fun times!
The new series doesn't stray that far from these past adventures. We get the same family troubles as our superhero tries to provide for his brood. The first issue is a radical departure from the previous series as many scenes are quite graphic. Something strange is happening to Buddy as at one point blood drips from eyes after using his powers, rescuing hostages.

Buddy rediscovering his powers |
As of this review, issue number 2 was just released. The early issues have been revolving around Buddy's daughter Maxine as well and her own powers. In issue 2, she turns a neighbor's arm into that of chicken's claw, during a confrontation. Buddy's been having nightmares about "The Red" and their connection to Maxine. I'll leave at that and won't reveal anymore spoilers but will say that Buddy's body has literally become a map for the adventures ahead!
The Good: It's the same strange and unique adventures that our hero is known for. Come along again for the ride!
The Bad: Graphic scenes are a turnoff!
Final Verdict: A-
