It's not too surprising that Apple released the iPhone 4S model instead of the much rumored iPhone 5. With the holiday shopping season too close to the 4S's actual release date of October 14, there was probably a grave chance that many people weren't going to be able to obtain one, if it was the iPhone 5. It's a given probability that the phone would've sold out instantly, leaving many empty Christmas stockings for those wishing to buy one. Of course, iPhone enthusiasts should have seen this incremental upgrade coming.
It's a given trend, that Apple has usually upgraded it's iPhone models with upgrades the following year after a model release. This happened with the 3GS model so rumors of an iPhone 5 model shouldn't have been taken so largely. I guess the delay from the usual summer release probably spurred this rumor.
The iPhone 4S is quite a dramatic leap from the iPhone 4. With 1080p video recording and stabilization on the rear video camera and 8 megapixels for the rear camera, these are quite compelling reasons to upgrade. However, it should be noted that it's the same design that came out last year, if design matters.
Actually it does for me, so I'll be skipping this upgrade.
