REVIEW: Batman #2

The best title of DC's New 52 continues! How does issue #2 fare?

In Batman #2, Scott Snyder continues his arc with more of the same formula and it makes for another great issue. Being a big fan of his Dick Grayson Batman, it's clear he knows Bruce Wayne Batman just as well; he writes Bruce much differently but still captures the essence (and sheer awesomeness) of the Batman exceptionally well. We see more of Batman at work both as bad ass crime fighter and the world's greatest detective, as well as Bruce Wayne out and about in Gotham City. There's the perfect mix of action and plot here.

One thing I love about Snyder's take on Batman is his characterization of Gotham City. Gotham City isn't just the setting but also a character in his stories. The buildings and backgrounds just feel deep, almost alive. Simply put, nothing is wasted. Every bit of dialogue is significant and every panel is detailed. That said, a lot of that epic feel of the issue also goes to the art. I loved the art of Greg Capullo in #1 and he doesn't disappoint here either.

Without spoiling the cliffhanger from last month and too many details this month, Batman #2 is an excellent follow-up. It's not as epic as #1 but is still a great book. I'll admit the cliffhanger from issue #1 was HUGE, and though clearly addressed in this issue, it seems to be resolved too quickly and almost practically shoved under the rug. It was an excellent hook to keep me reading but lost it's value overall. Although this doesn't take away from the overall story I would have enjoyed the continuation of that plot more. Oh well.

Of all 52 of DC's new books this month, Batman #2 was the one I looked forward to the most and should be the Batman book on everyone's pull list. If you read the first issue or even our review hopefully you understand why. If not, do yourself a favor and pick up the reprint of #1 as well.

THE GOOD: Another exceptional Bat-story from Scott Snyder. Smart dialogue, deep characterization, fun action, great plot.

THE BAD: The cliffhanger from issue #1 is resolved too quickly. Would have loved to have continued going with that plot point instead.

THE ART: Greg Capullo's 2nd official issue penciling Batman and still just as awesome as the 1st.

FINAL VERDICT: A+
