Whether it was leading a band of misfits and unlikely heroes, Robotman was always the backbone of the team. Whatever happend to the metallic marvel?
The enigmatic character Robotman began life as race car driver Cliff Steele. A freak accident on the raceway left his body severely injured. Scientist Niles Caulder was able to rescue Steele's brain and gave him new life with a robot body. Eventually, Caulder, Steele along with Elasti-Gitl and Negative Man would form the Doom Patrol and embark on many adventures. Sadly, with poor sales of their series, DC Comics editors, had them meet their death at the hands of their enemies Madame Rouge and Zahl.
Steele survived though. He would have further adventures with several incarnations of the Doom Patrol team. Robotman's greatest and most renowned adventures came under writer Grant Morrison. Simply put, Morrison put the Doom Patrol, which consisted of Steele, Dorothy Spinner, Crazy Jane, Rebis and Danny The Street, through some strange adventures. Niles Caulder returned as leader before turning against the team. Despite his metal form, teammate Crazy Jane developed a crush on him.
After a few more series which muddled the Doom Patrol/Robotman continuity, Steele returned to solo action. In DC Comics' latest, My Greatest Adventure miniseries, fans of Robotman can catch his further adventures.
