Review: Fables Issue 138

Despite being imprisoned, Geppetto is one crafty individual with a plan up his sleeve.

Writer: Bill Willingham
Artist: Russ Braun

A flashback tale Willingham and Braun reminds us just how resourceful he is, despite his current setback. You'll wish that Snow and Bigby had confined him to harsher quarters after reading this tale as the depths and tactics Geppetto uses, is truly unparalleled here. The spotlight of the story actually falls on one of Geppetto's minions for the most part though. You'll witness this minion combat mighty obstacles that in some aspects do tug at the heartstrings a bit. Willingham provides a twist at the end though with Geppetto's ultimate goal. Issue 138 is a refreshing interlude focusing on a character not many of us loyal fans seem to care of.

Geppetto, up to no good!
Braun's art is just so crisp and sharp, that you'll wonder why he has doesn't much Fables stories more. It's a welcome addition to Buckingham's style, as Braun delivers structured panels in this issue that are quite pleasing. It would have been nice to see Braun participate in more story arcs and stand-alone stories as well.

Final Verdict: 8/10
