Harley Quinn


A Supergirl television series on The CW, an upcoming Wonder Woman film. Some of DC Comics' superheroines are having their moment in pop culture. Actress Margot Robbie portrayed anti-heroine Harley Quinn in the upcoming Suicide Squad film. Harley Quinn has been featured across many platforms over the last decade, as a background character. With her role in the Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn's popularity has certainly soared to new heights. Here's a look at the character's enigmatic history.  




Harley Quinn: Injustice Gods Among Us

First introduced in the classic Batman The Animated Series cartoons, Harley has come along way from being the Joker's accomplice and has gained a cult following ever since. Besides cartoons, Harley Quinn was featured in the Birds of Prey TV series. She's also appeared in prominent video games such as the Batman Arkham series and even Injustice Gods Among Us. Surprising most in the comics industry, her recent comics series has had consistent appearance in the top twenty sales charts. Outselling longtime and established favorites such as Batgirl and Supergirl (source: Comichron). Additionally, Catwoman once the most prominent anti-heroine character in the DC Comics' stable of books, has seen that title slip into Harley Quinn's fingers, sales-wise.

With the Suicide Squad film, DC Comics and Warner Bros. have finally seized the opportunity to catapult Harley Quinn from B-List villain to rising star. Most of the Suicide Squad promotional material and merchandise has notably featured Robbie's Harley Quinn.

Is the general public ready for this bad-ass anti-heroine to be on the same level as Wonder Woman though? In a landscape where virtual unknowns such as The Guardians of the Galaxy can become box-office darlings, we think Harley Quinn can bring that same magic and flair to an even bigger audience. It's no surprise that Warner Bros. has a Harley Quinn and Birds of Prey film in the works with Margot Robbie reprising her role. Social media is abundant with many cosplayers and fans imitating Robbie and Warner Bros.' modern take on the character. Watch out world, Harley Quinn is set to take over the world.
