Texting While Driving

That slow driver behind you or in front of you? Probably texting or checking his Facebook status.  We all do it, even me. This is the new reality we have to deal with while driving on the road. I’m not basing this information from any scientific study but from personal experience only.  As our lives grow more connected to the internet, the above activities will be more common occurrences. Sometimes these actions can lead to tragic consequences.

We can pass laws to prevent drivers from committing these activities but it’s hard to catch people given the sheer scope of a typical drive. Would video cameras installed by roads or streets trying to catch drivers in the act of texting or surfing be as effective? What kind of privacy issues would rise out of this strategy?

Possible solutions? Lead by example. When you’re in the car with someone doing these activities, tell them directly or even suggestively not to pick up their device unless it’s an emergency.  Perhaps this can stem more people to stop using their devices while driving.

Until then, be safe on the road.
