Ephraim Goodweather, protagonist of the vampire apocalypse television series, The Strain, seems more lifeless and cold than the terrifying enemies, he is up against. The show's characters just don't reflect anything positive or endearing for fans to enjoy or cheer on.
In comparing The Strain to The Walking Dead, the characters lack the same appeal and empathy, that Rick Grimes and his team have captured with both male and female viewers. Protagonist Eph Goodweather played by Corey Stoll, is void of any appeal whatsoever. His character is reminiscent of the stereotypical absentee father of previous decades.
Goodweather doesn't even contact his ex-wife nor his son Zach, whom they share custody of, when the vampire apocalypse begins to unfold. We all know the strong bond between Rick and Carl Grimes. Rick would freak out, if he didn't see Carl for a good portion of the day. At one point, Goodweather has sex with his coworker/girlfriend in his wife's home. All the while, Goodweather's son just so happens to be downstairs.
Goodweather has a tremendous amount of character flaws that are more repulsive than likable. He seems driven by his work and to save the world from the vampire creatures. It's this same drive that probably cost Eph's marriage to fall apart. Personally, this is an outdated concept at a time when most parents, especially fathers, go out of their way to spend time with their children. Goodweather could use a major overhaul next season.
