Review: The Defenders Trade Paperback

The Defenders has always been that special kind of team that finds itself caught between The Avengers and mutant teams of the Marvel Universe.

While never being truly a team in it's past incarnations, several mainstays from past decades such as Namor and Dr. Strange make their appearances again in the new series by writer Matt Fraction and artist Terry Dodson. Spinning out of Fear Itself issue 7, Fraction has The Hulk gathering together this new team again, consisting of additional members Silver Surfer, Red She-Hulk and Iron Fist. Recently collected in a trade paperback edition, readers will enjoy the first six issues of the new series with a generous addition of bonus features.

Fraction initially starts the series off with the team trying to stop Nul The Breaker of Worlds with his rampage but also delivers another engaging storyline with the mystery of The Concordance Engine. Moreover, Fraction spans deep into the history of the Marvel Universe with this initial story arc, delving into the lives of Namor and especially Iron Fist. There are several stories within the collection that shines the spotlight on team members Dr. Strange, Namor and Iron Fist, which for me, were the best parts of the series.

Red She-Hulk Series

The premiere of the new series starring Carol Danvers as the new Captain Marvel, reminded us of the dearth of Marvel Comics heroines in their own titles. The last major heroine series starred She-Hulk under the helm of legend John Byrne, decades ago. A few Black Widow miniseries have come here and there.

Coincidentally at Comic-Con 2012, Marvel Comics has announced the launch of the Red She-Hulk series with writer Jeff Parker and artist Carlo Pagulayan guiding Betty Ross' adventures. This October, the Hulk series transforms into Red She-Hulk issue 58, for the debut issue. Expect a humorous side to the new series with the cover art pictured above.

Review: Amazing Spiderman Issue 687

Under the mind control of Dr. Octopus, The Avengers are ready to stop Spiderman from undermining Octopus' plan to eradicate the planet. Who will survive this final confrontation?

The epic miniseries within a series, "Ends of The Earth" by writer Dan Slott, reaches it's sense-shattering conclusion. We've seen Spiderman pushed to the limits in trying to stop Doctor Octopus' plan and at the same time, convince the world, that the villain is up to no good at all.

The variant covers by Gabrielle Dell'Otto, featured throughout our reviews, have been absolutely delicious! The various artists from Humberto Ramos to Stefano Caselli have done a bang up job! The dying Doctor Octopus, seemingly thwarted by Spiderman and his global comrades, has one final card up his sleeve though and that's the Avengers who are under his control.  With Sable, Black Widow and an unlikely ally in Mysterio, the team handily take down Earth's Mightiest Heroes with Mysterio's help.
